The Dos and Don’ts of Mattress Maintenance
DO
- Check for visible signs of wear and tear. Soft, non-supportive edges are a sign that your mattress should be replaced.
- Provide good support. A sturdy, high-quality bed frame and box spring will extend the life and comfort of your mattress.
- Remove stains immediately. Stains are always easiest to remove when they are fresh.
- Use a mattress cover. It will keep your mattress safe from dust and dirt, and it is much easier to clean than a mattress.
- Keep your mattress dry. Moisture, pressure and temperature inside a mattress will produce unwanted mold and mildew.
- Vacuum your mattress. Dust, dander and dust mites build up in your mattress, so vacuum regularly to maintain hygiene and to avoid allergies.
- Recognize the signs that you need a new mattress. If your quality of sleep isn’t what it used to be, it may be time to replace your mattress.
DON’T
- Eat in bed. As luxurious as breakfast in bed may seem, associated food spills and stains may prove difficult to clean or remove and may void your warranty.
- Sleep with pets. Encourage the family pet to sleep in its own bed so that yours stays clean.
- Let the kids use your bed as a trampoline. It’s a sure-fire way to damage the interior construction of your mattress.
- Rotate and flip the mattress. If you are at the point where you need to flip or rotate your mattress due to a comfort issue, then you are probably at the point where you need a new one.
